VDC

What is Virtual Design & Construction (VDC)?

VDC is the management of BIM deliverables and workflows to make more informed decisions about the design, performance, cost, and schedule of a project.

Build it digitally before building it in the real world. It’s far less expensive to modify something in a 3D model than during construction after materials have already been ordered.

What is a Building Information Model (BIM)? A 3D model in which geometry can be embedded with data.

In the past, the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry used 2D Computer Aided Design (CAD) or hand drafted drawings to communicate the design intent of a building along with the details that made it up. Physical models were important because they were more easily understandable to the general public who didn’t interpret 2D drawings for a living. Design teams produced drawings and specifications that were put out to bid and a general contractor would transform this into a reality, relying on their own means and methods to fabricate assemblies that make up a building.

One major downside to the past approach was the amount of quality control required to ensure everything matched. For example, if the front window of a house was 2ft x 3ft in the rendering, it needed to reflect that consistently in all elevations, plans, and schedules or there was a chance someone would order the wrong size window.

Since a BIM is in 3D, if you changed the window dimensions in that render it would automatically update it everywhere else that window was visible.
