02 Clarification On Research – Reading/Writing, Precedent Project, and Conceptual Explorations

CLARIFICATION ON RESEARCH –
READING/WRITING, PRECEDENT PROJECT, AND CONCEPTUAL EXPLORATIONS

To begin your design studio, this phase is essential to mark the beginnings of your design evolution. Try to see this phase as the source of the direction you will take for your project. This phase, together with site analysis, and the emergence of a purpose for your project, will be the basis of your design. The work of this phase will be included in your final design presentation and in your final portfolio of your term project.

READING AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS:

Writing/seminar assignments are required and included in the urban design course. The writing assignments are due on the dates. Each student will present a summary of his or her paper at the assigned seminar, and will discuss the major ideas of the urban design writers in these texts. References, bibliographies, and footnotes are required on all the writing assignments. Include additional writings by the author or by other authors to expand on your ideas.

From the two books assigned to you, select the features in each book, that bring the strongest and most impressive elements that you feel will contribute to your conceptual focus for your project. In the Istanbul Memories of the City, the elements should include the atmosphere as well as the description of important places, buildings, events, images of the city. In Ambiguous Spaces, the methodology of understanding of the urban and site theory is important.

Write 300 words on each of the books, as separate essays. Describe in your own words the features of the books that you have selected as important contributing understandings to your project.
